Leader As Coach
Leader As Coach/Teacher/Mentor
A 1999 study by Hay/McBer of that year's Fortune 500 companies showed that, second only to planned career assignments, one-on-one coaching was the tool most used to develop key people.
The identification of potential, and training and development of people is one of a leader's most important responsibilities. Unfortunately, in many organisations, leaders often underestimate its importance and also lack the skills necessary to fulfil an effective coaching role. In these cases, organisations miss out on the immediate and long-term benefits of building capacity in their workforce.
Fundamental to good coaching is the ability to listen, and then to act on what is heard in the context of the individual's and the organisation's aspirations. Coaching is an ongoing dialogue that provides the support and feedback required to help fulfil potential. As such, it is also important that a coach knows how to communicate in a way that makes sense to the person they're teaching.
Dattner Grant has coached and mentored numerous senior and middle-level executives in a variety of organisations, in the interests of helping these individuals to excel in their roles and achieve their goals.
In addition to providing this executive mentoring service, we have also developed the tools and materials required to assist leaders to become effective coaches in their own workplace.
As stand-alone workshops or as part of a longer-term leadership program, Dattner Grant can help leaders:
- Explore their role as coach/teacher/mentor
- Understand the theory of learning and teaching and assess their own preferences in this context
- Learn the skills necessary to be effective coaches and communicators
- Work with and coach a diversity of people.
